Our Story
It Started with a Big Orange Cat
In the winter of 2023, an unfamiliar orange cat began appearing at our heated outdoor shelters. At first, he was just a quiet visitor—slipping in at night to escape the bitter cold, then disappearing again by morning. But as the weeks passed, it became clear that our shelter had become his only refuge. January temperatures were dropping fast, and this little cat had nowhere else to go.
We brought him into our heated garage as a temporary resident while we searched for answers. We scanned him for a microchip (none found), posted him online, and waited to see if anyone would claim him. In the meantime, we kept him warm, fed, and safe.
We named him Nacho.
Slowly, Nacho began to trust us. He learned that hands could be gentle, that food would always come, and that he no longer had to face the freezing nights alone. When no one stepped forward to claim him, we made the commitment he deserved. Nacho was fully vetted, neutered, vaccinated, and—finally—welcomed into the “big house” as one of our resident cats.
Today, Nacho spends his days curled up on heating blankets, chasing toys, enjoying tuna treats, and even tolerating his cat‑sisters. He is safe. He is loved. And he is home.
Nacho’s story is just one example of why our work matters. Every donation helps us provide warmth, medical care, food, and safety to cats who have nowhere else to turn. Your support makes rescues like Nacho’s possible.

Nacho’s Story: From Frozen Nights to a Forever Home

Rooted in a lifelong love for animal rescue, my work with Catopia began long before its official launch in 2026. For years, I quietly rescued and fostered cats on St. Paul’s East Side, driven by a commitment that started in childhood and grew through volunteer service with Twin Cities organizations like Wags N Whiskers and Ruff Start Rescue.
Those experiences shaped Catopia’s purpose: compassionate, community-focused rescue that gives every cat the chance to thrive.
