How a Greenhouse Became a Cat Castle
In 2025, something became hilariously, unmistakably clear: the cats in need just kept finding us. No matter how many times we said, “Okay, this is definitely the last one,” another set of whiskers would appear at the edge of the property like a furry little plot twist. And honestly? We cant say no to that face!
Minnesota weather didn’t exactly make it easy. When winter got spicy with those face‑freezing temps and summer turned scorchin’ enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, our rescue cats needed more than luck — they needed shelter. Real shelter. The kind that laughs in the face of a -20° windchill and shrugs at a 102° heatwave.
For years, we maintained several small one‑cat satellite shelters scattered around the property. They were adorable, functional, and very “tiny-home chic,” but 2025 pushed us to think bigger. Much bigger.
So we took our former greenhouse — once home to tomatoes, herbs, and a few plants that didn’t make it — and transformed it into something extraordinary:
The Cat Castle
A fully insulated, temperature‑controlled, 120‑square‑foot feline haven built with love, purpose, and a little bit of chaos.
Inside, the Cat Castle is divided into two main areas separated by a permanent wall. This lets us safely isolate new or medically fragile cats while they get the care they need and slowly acclimate to the rest of the colony. No stress, no crowding — just thoughtful transitions and plenty of cozy corners.
And the best part? Heat and A/C. Because every fur‑baby deserves comfort, whether the weather is trying to freeze their whiskers off or turn them into rotisserie chickens.
The Cat Castle isn’t just a building. It’s a promise — that every cat who finds their way to us will have a safe and protected place to land. A place built because they kept showing up… and because we couldn’t imagine doing anything but saying yes.
We also have several insulated satellite shelters around the property, tucked into corners and under tree limbs- away from whipping winds and blazing sun. These smaller shelters are fully insulated and heated in the winter and offer our community cats a safe place to shelter and sleep in Minnesota's toughest temperatures. In the summer, they are cleaned out and offer protection from the rain and sun.
All of our shelters are monitored on a closed network of security cameras, so we can monitor the cats and make sure to handle any emergency situations. This led us to naming the shelters - and why not have fun with it! We have Ravenclaw (pictured below), Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, and Slytherin, as well as the Astronomy tower in our garage rafters. All of the shelters are decorated to match their house name.
